On the evening of July 2, Chinese rock star, Wang Feng joined hands with Pico, a company focusing on mobile virtual reality technology and product development, to hold an online concert. This is the third Live VR performance held by Pico, creating "borderless" interactive scenes and "hovering" live stages through VR technology.
Wang has a strong interest in science and technology. In 2017, he tried to launch the VR 4K version of his personal concert, which attracted the public’s attention in that year. Five years later, Wang worked with Pico to start VR live broadcasting of his performance again. This time, Pico applied 8K 3D VR live broadcasting technology to realize a pleasant experience like being in a scene without leaving home.
The monitor system was personally undertaken by sound engineer Shao Yong and his team MaxTeam took charge of mixing production. They chose KLANG system as the monitor for the concert. A total of two DMI-KLANG cards were used for the show, and were inserted into the DMI slot on the back of the DiGiCo Quantum5, each providing immersive stage monitoring for Wang and his band.
In fact, this is not the first time Wang Feng has used the KLANG system at his concert, he has already experienced the pure binaural mix brought by KLANG at his 2021 UNFOLLOW Tour. During the preparation, Wang suggested that he and his band also had the need for an immersive experience. In this way, not only will the audience be given a more realistic and three-dimensional experience visually, but the artists on stage and the band themselves will also be able to experience a real sense of immersion, delivering a more vivid and realistic performance.
KLANG's immersive mixing allows Wang Feng to go from his previous monitoring monaural to binaural, which has the advantage of eliminating the need to place monitor speakers on stage, that not only makes the stage less visual impact, but more importantly, it also reduces Wang's monitor volume, which helps a lot in protecting his hearing. According to theengineer, Wang's monitoring volume was reduced by a quarter after using KLANG.
Wang Feng requires the integrity of what he heard in his earphone. This resulted in an extremely complex situation, and even every delay single of the vocals had to be tunned manually. But with the help of KLANG's 3D mixing, engineers can more easily adjust the tone and control the balance in the mix.
"KLANG 3D's sound did a good job of eliminating in-head positioning, truly reproduce the audio in its natural environment, and effectively reduces the artist's fatigue after a long wear." said Ai Longfei, a sound engineer.
A praising comment from the band, “It makes the sound more clear. What’s more, the interface in KLANG’s APP allows the sound to be visualized, just drag the sound icon to achieve precise positioning of the instrument and processing of the frequencies, giving the musician more flexibility in his monitor.
DiGiCo Quantum5 consoles was using as monitorring, its upgraded engine with node processing providing engineers more options for processing. In addition, it also allows separate EQ, compression, etc. for different musicians' requirements. Its built-in diversified effects plug-ins allow us to eliminate external plug-ins, reducing the overall delay and achieving better results.
OB console chose DiGiCo SD5, with SD-RACK's powerful mic amplifier. The convenient and powerful operating system of SD5, making the recording playback more easier.
